Herbs

Herbs have such a huge range of uses in the garden.  First thing that catches the attention of people is the beautiful foliage and flowers of herbs.  They come in so many textures and colors, the planting possibilities are endless.  Then the fragrances produced by herbs capture the attention.  Scented plantings throughout the yard creates a personal engagement with people and plants.  People are drawn to rub these plants to release the smells through the yard.  People are not the only ones that notice this, beneficial insects are drawn to these plants.  Herbs are a great way to increase the number of pollinators, like the incredibly important honey bees, and other beneficial insects.
Through history herbs major role has been for cooking and medicinal use.  The impact the fresh herbs from the home garden has on cooking is remarkable.  Fresh herbs make every recipe just seem to have richer flavor and more appealing aroma. Then you add in the health benefits and medicinal uses of herbs and it is almost mind blowing.  Herbs are used in teas, taken in pure form in edibles, used as topicals and more.  Herbs are a plant that should be present in every home and/or landscape.

Basil

Basil is one of the most popular herbs to grow and is very easy to grow.  It is probably best known for its use in Italian cooking.  Basil has extremely aromatic leaves and comes in a large range of flavors.  The most common is sweet basil, but there are several other varieties, like Thai basil, lemon basil and many more.  This is a great plant to grow both indoors and out and like most herbs, the more you trim and use the better the plant does.

Mint

Mint is a tasty aromatic herb with many uses.  This herb is used in hot and iced teas, it can spice up a fruit salad, and our favorite, Mojitos.  Mint comes in a wide range of varieties like, spearmint, peppermint, lemon, lime, apple, strawberry and on and on.  Mint is extremely easy to grow, in fact it is a bit invasive.  We suggest planting mint in containers in order to control it from taking over flower beds.  Another great attribute of mint is as a repellent, certain mints are useful in keeping mosquitoes, ants and flies at bay.
